A Northland couple has been fined nearly $6,000 for animal cruelty after they left their stock in a flooding paddock. Bruce and Jan Jonson had been found guilty of failing to ensure the physical and health needs of 39 cattle on their Okaihau farm.
It is the first conviction of its type in thirty years.
The couple failed to heed warnings to move the stock to higher ground with the onset of heavy rain.
