Dog shot and killed
Cary, NC (US)

Incident Date: Sunday, Apr 10, 2005
County: Wake

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Ivo Dervev

Police say the Youngs' neighbor shot and killed the family's 4-year-old pet chihuahua named Charlie. Shannon Young, is so distraught over last weekend's shooting, she called out sick to work.

"I have two boys," Young said. "Charlie was the third child."

Police charged the neighbor, Ivo Dervev, with cruelty to an animal. They say he shot the dog with a pellet gun through a slit in the backyard fence on Dundalk Way. The pellet hit a major artery in the dog's neck.

Dervev is free on bond. His lawyers advised him not to discuss the incident, but Dervev told Eyewitness News that he has apologized to the Youngs and hopes they accept his apology.

"Right now, I don't know if I can accept it," Young said.

She said her chihuahua bothered Dervev for some reason. He owned a pit bull, and Young says the two dogs fought in the past.

"The pit was on top of Charlie and had Charlie in his mouth," she said. "If it hadn't been for a neighbor who was walking by, I'm sure Charlie would have been gone that day."
