Steven C. Allison, age 52 of Lynnfield, MA was charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty for abandoning an Old English Sheepdog named Willis behind an elementary school in Kingston, NH on Saturday, March 9th.
The 4 year old, neutered dog was tied to a dumpster behind the D.J. Bakie School on Main Street with a note that read: "Willis is his name. Find a good home for him."
Kingston Police discovered Allison was the dog's owner after a representative of the NH Old English Sheepdog Rescue Inc. in Lincoln, MA told police that they had been speaking with a family that wanted to place a sheepdog named Willis. The Sheepdog Rescue learned about the dog being abandoned from the Eagle Tribune while they were investigating to write the story.
Allison, who is a firefighter, told police he abandoned the dog because he did not want the dog euthanized. Allison was arrested on Monday, April 1st.
The dog has had behavioral problems, he has snapped at one person and bit another. Allison, attempted to place the dog with the Animal Rescue League at the Salem shelter but was told because of the behavioral problems, the dog would be euthanized. So he took the dog back and brought him up to NH and left him.
At the Kingston shelter, Willis was shaved and when approached by a visitor, growled and barked, but when led out on a leash, offered a paw when asked to shake.
The dog was evaluated by the NH SPCA in Stratham, NH and was placed up for adoption in April 2002. He will be placed in a home that won't have children or men, as he is a bit aggressive towards them. "He will need a very strong owner, he is actually very friendly, especially toward women" stated Virginia L. MacDonald of the NHSPCA.
Ann Raker, from the Old English Seep Dog Rescue, who contacted the Kingston police about Willis, stated that sheepdogs are known for their clownish and fun personalities, but the do not enjoy a good reputation always around children because they are a herding breed.
