When Paul Arehart was walking to the post office, he heard the cries of a kitten. After investigating, he found a 10-week old kitten writhing in the leaves. The kitten had been beaten badly about the head and had a noose around its neck.

Arehart said, "It was horrible. It brought tears to my eyes."

It looked like a knot on the end of the bloody noose had slipped free. How long the cat had been injured or where it came from was not clear. Arehart found the cat on a side street near Roanoke Street and Draper Road.

The kitten did not have any collar or identification. Arehart took the kitten to the office and co-workers took it to a veterinarian. The kitten was treated for cuts around the eye. Its balance is off perhaps due to inner ear injuries.

A co-worker notified the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Arehart was going to notify the police.

Arehart plans to keep the kitten, a black female with white feet and belly at his apartment, but he hasn't picked a name yet.

Lila Borge Wills, Vice President of the VA Partnership for Animal Welfare and Support and an animal rescue coordinator took photos of the cat and will post them on the organization's web site at www.vapaws.org. She said the noose was an intricate one and took some time and premeditation to make.
