Puppy mill - 14 dogs seized
Southlake, TX (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Apr 12, 2005
County: Tarrant

Disposition: Alleged

Abuser names unreleased

A 60-year-old Cleburne man selling puppies at a local flea market on April 12 is under investigation by the Southlake Police Department on suspicion of cruelty to animals.

Police were called to the southeast corner of South White Chapel Boulevard and Texas 114 about 11:30 a.m. about a man selling puppies that appeared to be malnourished and sickly.

Police declined to release the man's name because the case is still under investigation and he appeared to be working alone, Lt. Ashleigh Douglas said.

Police found 14 puppies of different breeds, between nine and 10 months old. The man gave the animals to the Humane Society of North Texas, which also is investigating.

If convicted of cruelty to animals, a class A misdemeanor, the man could face up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $4,000, Douglas said.

Tammy Kirkpatrick, director of animal care services, said the puppies appear to have parvo, a potentially fatal gastrointestinal virus commonly found in puppies and dogs that have not been properly vaccinated.

Kirkpatrick said she doesn't expect all of the puppies to survive the virus.

"It just depends on how strong these puppies are," she said. " It's a day-to-day kind of thing."
