Shane Corey, 33, of Superior has been charged with two counts of animal cruelty for allegedly tying cats together and encouraging them to fight.
He is scheduled to appear in Douglas County Circuit Court on Nov 5 on the city ordinance violations. He faces a possible fine of $284.
The police found a tape containing evidence of animal abuse in Corey's residence at 2335 Tower Avenue last month during a search warrant of his house involving a separate investigation.
Several video tapes were seized. When the officers viewed them, detectives saw cats tied together and encouraged to fight, apparently by Corey. The tape showed several cats tied together by a line and one clear fight scene, according to Superior police reports.
An agreement to give up his cats was signed by Corey and they were taken to the Superior Animal Shelter. There is some question as to whether they were the same cats seen in the videos.
Wally Tribbey, the city's animal control officer, said "I don't know if they're the same cats or not. I just removed every cat in the house."
Two cats were adopted and three are being cared for by the Animal Rescue Federation.
One of the cats had severely injured paws; another a broken knee and femur, which requires surgery that will cost $300-$500; both of the cats are lethargic and stressed.
Many people thought Corey should have faced more serious charges and at least be forced to pay for the surgery. The decision was made to charge Corey with city ordinance violations rather than pursue criminal charges that could be difficult to prove.
Case UpdatesShane Corey, 33, was found guilty by default Friday when he failed to show up for his scheduled court appearance.
Corey was fined $284 by Douglas County Court Commissioner George Glonek for the ordinance violations. | Source: Duluth MN News-Tribune - Nov 6, 1999 Update posted on Apr 12, 2005 - 4:40PM |
