Cats poisoned
Riverside, RI (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Dec 23, 2003
County: Providence

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

Three stray cats were found dead on Dec 23, 2003 in a yard in Riverside, the same area where other cats were suspected of being poisoned three months ago.

Police Lt. Richard Frazier said the deaths are considered suspicious, although it's unknown whether the feline deaths in September and those this week are related.

The bodies of the two cats and a kitten found by Sachem Road this week were sent to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Frazier said. They'll test what the cats may have ingested and determine whether they were poisoned, he said.

The recent deaths have caused The Defenders of Animals, a Rhode Island animal rights group, to double a reward to $2,000 for information that leads to the conviction of the person responsible for poisoning cats in the neighborhood.

In September, a series of cat poisonings around Floyd Avenue, which is near Sachem Road, were reported. The toxicology report on one of the dead cats showed the presence of antifreeze. A container of sardines and antifreeze were confiscated from a resident's yard.

Dennis Tabella, the director of The Defenders of Animals, said more evidence was collected this week that appears to be meat laced with antifreeze. The Defenders of Animals is asking Riverside residents to report any missing cats, or cases of cats becoming ill or dying suddenly.
