On Wednesday, April 6, Animal Control Officers from the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office responded to a Juniper Wood Ranch residence regarding a reported case of possible animal abuse. Juniper Wood is a remote area south of Ashfork, Arizona.
The property is made up of about ten mobile homes and camp trailers that have been converted into make-shift kennels. The property has no running water or septic services. The residents and property owners are a Terry R. Bane, age 63, and his wife, Merry L. Bane, age 47.
Upon arrival, the officers found the property to have over 100 caged animals, including dogs, cats, chickens and pigeons. The animals were found to be dehydrated, suffering from malnutrition, and diseased. In each of the trailers, the animals were found to be living in unsanitary, unhealthful conditions. The officers discovered that dead cats were left, unattended to, in one of the trailers.
On Saturday, April 9, at about 7:00 a.m., Sheriff's Deputies, YCSO and Prescott Police Animal Control Officers, and a veterinarian again went to the Juniper Wood property.
Mr. and Mrs. Bane were taken into custody and later booked into Yavapai County Jail on Animal Cruelty charges. The Bane's provided signed consent relinquishing rights to the disposition of the animals. A search warrant was served on the Bane property. It was inspected by a member of the Yavapai County Development Services Land Use Unit, and was legally condemned.
In total, 121 animals were found to be caged on the property. It was determined that 108 of the animals needed to be humanely euthanized. That procedure was conducted by the professional veterinarian who was on scene.
Eight pigeons were released and four dogs were determined to be healthy enough for adoption. Those dogs include a terrier, a poodle, and a dachshund that are available for adoption through the Mile-Hi Animal Hospital in Prescott. The fourth dog, a tri-color Husky mix, is available for adoption at the Prescott Animal Shelter.
Case UpdatesMerry Bane pleaded guilty today and has received a six-month jail sentence. She will serve six months, and will then be on probation for three years.
