Cat strangled with rope
Pasadena, TX (US)

Incident Date: Saturday, Apr 9, 2005
County: Harris

Disposition: Alleged
Case Images: 1 files available

Alleged: 11 year old boy

Pasadena police arrested an 11-year-old boy for animal cruelty after he allegedly hurt a cat by strangling it with a rope at 2802 West Side. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered a white cat that had been injured around the neck. A 10-year-old witness told police that the boy got mad at the cat and tried to strangle it.

The witness told police that she did not know why the boy did it because she said that the cat did not do anything to the boy.

The cat had blood on its fur from where the boy allegedly strangled it, according to Lt. M.P. Jackson, a spokesman for the Pasadena Police Department.

The child was arrested, and the district attorney's office accepted charges of animal cruelty against him.

Ginger Harper, director of Community Youth Services for the Harris County Protective Services, said that children normally do not abuse animals. Parents who discover their children abusing animals should consider having their children tested. She said that often the abuse of animals is a sign of another problem, and those children should get some help, which should include therapy.

Karen Hoffman, the supervisor of Pasadena animal control, said that anyone who witnesses animal cruelty should report it immediately.

She said animal control has officers who can talk to parents and children about animal cruelty and how to care for animals. Animal control also has educational videos for all ages, Hoffman said. She added educational programs can be given to small groups or to classes at schools.

On Thursday, Hoffman said she had not been contacted about the incident.
