Daniel D. Burton, 19, of McDonough St. was arrested by Joliet police Nov. 22. An officer saw Burton walking a dog near Midland Avenue and Jefferson Street, police said. The dog had a 12-foot chain wrapped around its neck, police said. A 10-pound weight from a barbell set had been attached to its collar.
Burton claimed he was trying to build up the dog's strength, police said. She recently had puppies, he told police. The officer said using the chain and the barbell are techniques people use to train animals for dog fights.
Sara E. Shutts, a public defender, is Burton's lawyer. She came to court Friday and asked a judge to continue the matter. Burton will return to court May 3.
