Kittens beaten with stones, one dies Cleveland, OH (US)Incident Date: Sunday, Oct 25, 1998 County: Cuyahoga
Disposition: Convicted
Defendant/Suspect: 11 year old boy
The 11 year old Cleveland boy pleaded guilty to stoning two kittens, one of the kittens died. Reason given for the stoning was he, "had nothing else to do."
The boy's name was not given because of his age.
Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court Judge Peter M. Sikora said he would sentence the youth on April 20.
Sikora said to the boy, "What you did was very, very bad. I don't want you to think that because you are walking out of here that everything is OK."
He was arrested on Oct 25 for stoning the two kittens near his home in the 1300 block of W. 83rd Street. There were several neighbors who witnessed the stoning. The police took the two kittens to a veterinarian. One of the kittens died because of its injuries. The other kitten survived but it took approximately $2,000 worth of operations. The operations were paid for by contributions from concerned people.
The kitten has been adopted and seems to have recovered from severe internal organ damage.
The boy's mother is very concerned. She said she knew he had problems and felt that counseling was vital.
His mother says, "He was suspended by the Wilbur Wright Middle School for talking back to the teacher. He's starting to fail in school, but when I ask him why, he says he doesn't know. He's not telling me anything."
Assistant Prosecutor Terry M. Brennan said he has received more mail and phone calls on this case than on any other he has worked on, including murders.
Brennan said a 7-year old boy was also involved in the incident but was greatly influenced by the older boy. They are still investigating the 7-year old's involvement in the stoning. References- Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mar 4, 1999
