Police and animal cruelty officials are looking for a dog and its owner after horrified bystanders saw the animal being dragged by a car. "Nobody who has come forward seemed to get a look at the licence plate," said Jamie Frye, an inspector with the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
"We've also talked to all the vets in the area and no dog was brought in for disposal or treatment."
People reported seeing a dog being dragged behind a red Ford travelling about 60 kmh on Tuesday.
Frye said witnesses described the dog as a blondish-brown puppy that was tied to the car with a blue rope. It appeared to be dead.
One witness saw the car pull into a gas station and said the driver "freaked out" when he saw the puppy behind the vehicle, Frye said.
No charges will be laid if investigators determine the dragging was accidental, he added.
But if the action was deliberate, the driver could be charged with animal cruelty. References
