The Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary revealed that "a great number" of people have offered an appallingly neglected "living skeleton" of a dog comfort and companionship, in the past week.
Last week, Sunday Life highlighted the pitiful plight of the two to three-year-old dog discovered in a life-threatening state by an animal lover in the village of Kells.
Even experienced animal welfare workers were shocked at the condition of the dog - believed to be a rare Dogue de Bordeaux breed - and appealed for help to find who was responsible for the case of cruel neglect.
Mid-Antrim Sanctuary trustee, Angus Moore, said that they had been heartened by the number of Sunday Life readers who had contacted them.
Said Angus: "There has been a great number of calls to the sanctuary, asking about the dog and expressing their concern for it.
"Seven people, in addition to the lady who found it, have expressed interest in giving the dog a home.
Mr Moore said that the animal, nicknamed Honey by veterinary carers, was "progressing quite well".
However, according to the sanctuary's vet, Honey will have to have her blind left eye removed, and is also being treated for kidney disease.
The discarded dog is also being given a course of intravenous fluids, to help restore it to good health. References
