Animal Welfare Officers continue to seek leads on the abusers of Coco, a six-year-old male Siamese found near death by a Fountain resident. Coco was shot multiple times with a pellet gun, many times in the face; a dart from a dart gun was also removed from his side by Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region veterinary technicians.
After receiving immediate treatment at the Humane Society of Pikes Peak Region, Coco was rushed to Westside Animal Hospital, where he spent two days in veterinary care. Several more pellets were removed, but those lodged behind and around his eyes could not be removed for fear of further damage. Coco is permanently blinded in one eye as a result of his abuse, but he does have a chance to regain partial vision in the other eye.
Currently, Coco is recovering at HSPPR before going into foster care. He is eating well, which gives staff hope for a good physical recovery. It remains to be seen whether he can psychologically recover from his traumatic experience, and learn to trust humans again.
If Coco does recover fully, he will not be ready for adoption for a minimum of ten days, or more likely, at least a month. People interested in adopting Coco must meet certain criteria to be placed in a pool of potential homes. For example, potential adopters must not have children younger than 15 years old in the home; must agree to Coco being an indoor cat; must understand that he has undergone severe trauma and treat him accordingly; and meet several other criteria as well. The potential adopters will be interviewed, and HSPPR staff will select the most appropriate home. For more information on joining the pool of potential adopters, please call (719) 473-1741 and dial 0 for an operator.
