President of the Animal Rescue League, Larry Hirsch, said the Chariho-Westerly Animal Rescue League is offering a $700 reward for information leading to the conviction of the person or persons who set an oil-soaked cat on fire on Oak Street in Ashaway.
The Animal Rescue League voted to put up a portion of the reward and the rest was pledged by individuals.
On November 2 a jogger saw a burning cat on a rocky area about 15 to 20 feet off the road. She did not want to be identified. When she stopped to look at the burning cat, it was being consumed by fire, the cat was dead and seemed to be covered in oil.
She went to a friend's house nearby to call police. When she got back to the location about 5-10 minutes later, the carcass was gone.
She said, "It was kind of creepy." Whoever burned the cat was obviously there, hiding the whole time I was there looking at the fire.
The second incident occurred when an Oak Street cat owner let her cat outside at dusk. The cat came back into the home about 10:00 p.m. tracking oil through the house.
Larry Hirsch said, "We're pretty much convinced it's the same people."
He said, we are taking this very seriously some violent criminals got their start torturing animals. "This should be a high priority because of where it can lead." Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
