Cat blown up with explosive device
Redmond, WA (US)

Incident Date: Monday, Jun 22, 1998
County: King

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: 16 year old boy

An unidentified 16-year old Redmond area boy was booked into a juvenile detention center for investigation of first-degree animal cruelty and detonation of an explosive device.

The boy lives in Finn Hill and will likely face Class C felony charges of cruelty to animals and detonation of explosives.

The dead animal was found Monday in the woods near a home in the Engish Hill neighborhood near Redmond. Pieces of the dead cat were found by a 10-year old girl. She found the cat's carcass and severed head in the woods near her family's home north of the Grousemont Farm Estate subdivision in the 16300 block of Northeast 130th Street.

Two additional people are also under investigation as possible accomplices. It is believed possibly several of them taped some sort of explosive, possibly a high-powered firecracker to the cat's body. The cat had powerful fireworks strapped to its neck and set them off. A nearby mailbox was also blown up.

The owner of the black cat with white paws has not been located.

The boy is a high school junior, he has been taken to the King County Youth Services Center where he will be held for about two days, pending formal charges.

The police made an arrest after tracing the license plate of a car seen leaving the area.
