Unspecified animal cruelty Corvallis, OR (US)Incident Date: Sunday, Feb 6, 2005 County: Benton
Disposition: Dismissed
Person of Interest: Daniel Kalavi
A Corvallis man was convicted in Benton County Circuit Court on March 23, 2005 on charges stemming from an attack on a group of people with a hookah. Daniel Kalavi, 20, pleaded guilty to unlawful use of a weapon, first-degree burglary, two counts of fourth-degree assault, and driving under the influence of intoxicants.
Judge Locke Williams sentenced Kalavi to 19 months in prison and three years' post-prison supervision. Kalavi was also ordered to pay $4,174.75 in fines and fees, and his driver's license was suspended for three years.
About 1 a.m. Feb. 6, Corvallis police responded to a report of a fight at a residence in the 400 block of Northwest 16th Street. There they found Kalavi trying to drive away and bleeding from superficial stab wounds in his back.
After being asked to leave the residence, witnesses told police, Kalavi had struck another man in the back with a 3-foot-tall hookah, swinging the glass-and-metal water pipe like a baseball bat. He also allegedly menaced another male with a lancelike portion of the hookah after it was broken.
One of the men involved in the altercation stabbed Kalavi with a pair of scissors during the incident. The man was not arrested, police said, because he seemed to be acting in self-defense.
Kalavi initially faced 18 counts after being indicted by a grand jury. Counts dismissed in court included felony charges of unlawful use of a weapon, second-degree assault and attempted second-degree assault and misdemeanor charges of strangulation, menacing, harassment, fourth-degree assault, attempted animal abuse and attempted assault of a police officer.
