Timothy S. Daley, 36, of W. Erie Avenue, was charged with cruelty to animals, having a prohibited wild animal and disorderly conduct by intoxication, all misdemeanors. Daley's bond was set at $3,400.
Daley who allegedly beat a stray cat with a hammer and tried to feed it to his Burmese python was placed in city jail yesterday.
An acquaintance, Steven Lassen, told police that Daley had found the stray cat outside Daley's house trailer when they were leaving for work.
Daley placed the cat in his trailer where he kept his 10-foot python.
When they got back from work, Daley opened the door and the cat ran away. Daley ran after the cat and captured it again, took it to the bathroom and rapped it in the head with a metal hammer.
The dazed cat was placed in the bathtub where the python was usually fed. The cat was bitten a couple times by the snake and then the snake became disinterested in the cat. Police said Daley hit the cat again.
Daley said he didn't know where the snake was when the police arrived at his trailer. Steven Lassen pointed down the hallway toward the bathroom. Daley then got the snake and brought it out hissing with its jaws open.
Both the snake and the cat were turned over to the Lorain City dog warden.
Police reported Daley had jokingly called the stray cat "Thumper" while at work on Saturday. Daley said he could save $10 in beer money if he fed the cat to the python rather than buy snake food at the pet store.
