A Pike County man is offering a reward after someone killed his prized hunting dog. Doug Anderson's beagles are some of the most well-trained rabbit-hunting dogs in the world, Bowersock reported. Anderson owns nine of them. The most special one was named Little Miss Mandy.

Anderson said he was training Mandy and a beagle, named Rolling Thunder, Tuesday afternoon for the world hunting dog championships when someone shot them.

"The dogs were running the rabbit," Anderson said. "They ran it right past me, down over here about 100 yards and then, 'Boom! Boom!' "

When Anderson reached the area, Mandy was dead and Thunder was seriously wounded. Two shotgun casings were nearby, he said. There were nine buckshots in Thunder's collar, Bowersock reported. The dog is still receiving treatment at a Portsmouth veterinary hospital.

"Somebody could walk up, holler at the dogs and pull a gun and shoot it. I don't think much of that kind of a person," Anderson said.

Mandy was the top female rabbit dog in the world, Bowersock reported.

"She was as good a dog as any," Anderson said. "She had a good chance to go out there and win it."

Anderson said he's offering a $500 reward to anyone who "could point me to the man so that he can be dealt with by the authorities."
