The German shepherd was shot once in the neck about 8:00 p.m. Tuesday on Cardiff Place, near the corner of Uniacke and Gottingen Streets.
After the shooting, neighbors called the Halifax Regional Police and reported hearing the gunshot.
When the police arrived the dog was still alive, but died shortly after they took him to the Metro Animal Emergency Clinic in Dartmouth.
There weren't any witnesses to the shooting. Some speculate it might have been self-defense or a message.
Police said the dog seemed docile while they transported him to the animal clinic. It is not known if the dog had been attacking a person or another dog before the shooting.
During the time the police were investigating the dog shooting incident, the back window of their parked cruiser was smashed in. The officers weren't in the vehicle when the window was smashed.
