Dog beaten and tortured, causing nerve damage
Ishpeming, MI (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Jun 21, 2002
County: Marquette

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged:
» 14 year old boy - Convicted
» 16 year old boy

Two teenagers, 14 and 16 years old, have been accused of beating and torturing a black Laborador. The names of the teens have not been disclosed. The Lab has been left with severe nerve damage.

The 14-year old Ishpeming teen pleaded no contest to one count of animal torture . He was sentenced to three years' probation and ordered to perform 300 hours community service.

Marquette County Probate Judge Michael Anderegg also ordered the teen to pay $287 in restitution to cover the dog's veterinary bills, apologize in writing to the dog's owner and undergo a substance abuse evaluation.

Anderegg said he recommended the 14-year old perform at least some community service at the county humane society, but wasn't sure if he would be allowed to because of the nature of his crime.

The executive director Caron Christopherson said if society directors approved Anderegg's recommendation, it would be the first time someone convicted of beating an animal performed community service at the humane shelter.

The 16-year old has pleaded innocent to the same charge and will face trial Aug 20 in Juvenile Court.
