Dog starved, another shot to death Eagle Point, OR (US)Incident Date: Monday, Dec 31, 2001 County: Jackson
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Frederick Lorenz Hines, Jr
Frederick Lorenz Hines Jr, 36, has been accused of starving his St Bernard almost to death, shooting and killing his neighbor's dog. Both of these alleged crimes will be combined in one trial.
Charges were filed by the Jackson County District Attorney's Office in January following a length investigation into allegations of animal abuse that took place at Hines' home in the 10000 block of East Antelope Road.
Animal control officers say Hines allegedly tied his 3-year old St Bernard, Chief, to a tree and neglected him for three months. Chief who should have weighed approximately 170 pounds weighed only 90 pounds and was near death. The plight of the dog was brought to attention of animal control by Hines' ex-wife when she discovered the dog and turned him over to authorities.
Chief recovered and has been placed with a new family. The St Bernard Rescue Foundation Inc Shady Cove aided with his recovery and placement with a new family.
Judge Lorenzo Mejia approved the request to combine it with another animal abuse case against Hines stemming from a February incident.
Sheriff's deputies allege Hines shot and killed a neighbor's dog with a .22 caliber rifle. The body of neighbor's dog was never recovered.
Hines told police he shot the animal because it had chased his chickens.
Hines has entered not guilty pleas to all charges. He is expected to appear again in court on Sept 9 when a trial date is expected to be set.
