Diane Culley, owner of Bear, the family's 4-year old Chow felt safer in her home with Bear watching over them. Especially since strange people were cutting through her backyard at night.
Culley said, "Anytime anyone walked up the street, he would bark and let us know."
Just a few weeks after moving into her Lincoln Street home, Bear was shot in their backyard.
Crystal, Culley's 14 year old daughter, said "If someone tried to hurt me, (Bear) would try to protect me." Crystal was very close to Bear and very upset when he was shot and killed.
Culley and her family had Bear since he was a puppy. He started off as a house dog but then as he got bigger when he got excited he would start knocking stuff down in the home.
When Culley moved into the Lincoln Street residence with her three children in December they kept Bear on a chain in their backyard.
Culley said she soon noticed people cutting through her backyard to get to a drug house. Everytime a stranger went through her yard, Bear would bark.
Early Thursday, three gunshots were heard. Culley waited a while before investigating, she went outside to see if anyone had been shot. Culley found Bear still alive, lying on the ground. Bear had been shot twice in the leg and once in the stomach. One of the bullets punctured a lung and nicked his heart.
Bear was taken to a emergency animal hospital and then to another veterinarian. Culley was told expensive surgery would be required and then they couldn't guarantee Bear would live.
Culley called Crystal to come to the animal hospital to say "goodbye". Bear was cremated.
Culley's landlord said he doesn't allow tenants to keep dogs, but thought he had a tenant who needed her dog for protection in a rough neighborhood.
He said, It is such a crime-ridden neighborhood, and here is a lady who can't do much better than she has. She is making a new life for herself and her family." References« NC State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Guilford County, NC
