Bronx, NY (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Jan 26, 2005
County: Bronx

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Ronald Johnson

The owner of a Rottweiler whose choke collar was so tight its neck had grown around it was arrested on a charge of aggravated animal cruelty, pet protection authorities said.

On Jan 26, 2005, Ronald Johnson took the 2-year-old dog, named Bear, to a Manhattan animal control center to have him euthanized because he had become aggressive, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said.  Johnson is a 49 year old street vendor from the Bronx.

When veterinarians examined Bear, they found he was suffering from 10 puncture wounds from the prongs of the collar, the ASPCA said in a news release.

About half the collar was embedded in the dog's neck, and his skin, hair and muscle had grown around it, ASPCA spokesman Joseph Pentangelo stated.

Bear underwent surgery to remove the collar, but he was extremely aggressive _ at least in part because of the condition - so he was euthanized, Pentangelo stated.

Johnson was arrested at March 14 and was being held at central booking in the Bronx, Pentangelo stated.

Aggravated animal cruelty, a felony, is punishable by up to two years in prison.
