Dog shot 3 times in two weeks
Ashburnham, MA (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Feb 28, 2002
County: Worcester

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

A liver and white color male German short-haired pointer has been shot three times in the past two weeks. The owner wishes not to be identified and lives on Willard Road.

The owner has no idea who would want to harm her dog. He is a friendly dog that was adopted from a pound. The dog roams the acreage surrounding his owner's home enclosed by an electronic fence. She says the shooter would be trespassing when the dog was shot.

Margaret J. Bennett, Animal Control Officer, is trying to find out who is responsible for shooting the dog. The veterinarian informed Bennett about the shootings. The dog is about 3 years old. The first time the injured dog was brought to the veterinarian it was thought to be a hole made by a stick. The second time the dog was brought for another injury, it was determined it had been shot. It was then discovered the first injury was a gun shot wound also.

On the second visit two projectiles were removed from the dog's chest. The bullet from the first shooting was never recovered. The dog is now recovering at the home of his owner.

The Animal Control Officer, Margaret Bennett, said, "We don't know what kind of firearm it was yet, but hopefully we're going to find out. This is a cruelty case, as far as I'm concerned."

Ms Bennett asks those with information to contact her, anonymously, if they prefer - through the Ashburnham police at (978) 827-5714.
