Case Updates: 1 update(s) available

A Fort Bragg soldier has been charged with cruelty to animals and maltreatment of animals for burning a cat on a barbecue grill, officials said.

The case has been referred to the chain of command for disciplinary action and possible administrative action, Fort Bragg spokeswoman Maria Taylor said. The soldier's name has not been released.

The cat was burned June 15 on the base and was treated at the post's animal clinic before being transferred to Dogwood Animal Hospital, said Shannon Speight-Lynch, a spokeswoman for Womack Army Medical Center.

Dr. Jim Williams, a veterinarian at Dogwood, said he was told the cat had been purposely burned on a barbecue grill.

Another veterinarian, Dr. Chris Faircloth, removed healthy skin from the cat's stomach to replace burned skin around its stomach. Stitches run from one front leg across the top of the cat's back to the other front leg.

Its whiskers and the tips of its ears are gone. The whiskers will grow back, but the ears will not, Faircloth said.

The hospital is donating the cat's treatment, which comes to about $1,200 so far.

It was not immediately clear who owned the cat.
