Dozens of abused animals are looking for new homes after more than 200 malnourished dogs - most of them puppies - cats, and birds were rescued from a puppy mill in Tyler County. Officers seized 206 dogs, cats, rabbits, chickens and guinea pigs from the home. One of the dogs died. The others are being nursed back to health at the Houston Humane Society.

They're now at the Houston Humane Society, where volunteers gave them a good scrub down, food, and shots.

Animal control officials say their owner, Brenda Shoemaker, was breeding them to sell to pet stores. Their cages were filthy and their food and water were contaminated.

"There are some legit breeders. Most of them are not. They're in it for the money," said Sgt. Mark Timmers with the Harris County Precinct 6 Constable's office. "They overbreed them. They have them live in these conditions that are just deplorable."

The animals will be quarantined for four to six weeks. If you want to start the process of putting your name on a list to adopt them, you can log onto the Houston Humane Society website.

No charges were immediately filed against the owners of the puppies.

To contact the DA in this case, urging vigorous prosecution and a lifetime ban on owning animals if they are convicted:
