A vicious prank believed to have been carried out by a teenage gang left a young, stray Yorkshire Terrier stabbed with a meat skewer.

The name on the dog's collar was "Sailor." The small dog had been wandering loose in the Castletroy area of Limerick for a number of weeks before being stabbed.

The skewer had been embedded five inches deep into the dog's back, it missed hitting one of its lungs.

Ms Fitzgibbon said, "A neighbor brought him to my house and he was very distressed and just kept trying to take out the skewer and this was hurting him severely."

"We took him to the veterinary hospital where he was sedated before operating on him and his vital signs look very good."
