County: Van BurenDisposition: Alleged
Alleged: Name Undisclosed
Erin and Emery Green's 18-month old Chesapeake Bay retriever, Gypsy, was shot by a neighbor when she ran out of an open sliding door and into a neighbor's yard.
Green's husband ran after Gypsy when she escaped from their property, but before he could catch the dog he heard a gunshot before getting to the suspect's yard.
Green then saw the suspect dragging Gypsy's body into a field.
Erin Green said it all happened so quickly. Trooper Matt Bolger estimated the entire incident took about two minutes.
When the Green's son, Levi, spoke his first word it was "Gypsy." Erin Green, Levi's mother said, "I've never seen an animal and boy be so close."
The Greens said the suspect lied about shooting the dog until they told him they were calling the state police. Trooper Bolger said the man admitted shooting Gypsy but said he claimed he fired on the animal because it attacked his dog.
Trooper Bolger said the Michigan State Police are seeking felony charges against the 66th Street man who allegedly shot the dog. Bolger has submitted a warrant request for unlawful killing of an animal and confiscated a .12-gauge shotgun allegedly used to kill the dog.
Van Buren County prosecutors have yet to decide whether they'll charge the suspect.
