John Kennelly, 36, of Boulder Creek is being sought by police for the knifing of a dog in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The dog, a black and tan German shepherd, called Glowers was stabbed on a dirt road about half a mile from Highway 9, near Boulder Creek.
Kennelly allegedly stabbed the dog because he thought at the time the dog belonged to a logging protester.
Jack Verburg, an equipment operator, said Kennelly told him he thought he had made a mistake and killed his dog.
Verburg explained the dog belonged to a logging contractor Hen Truong, Verburg's boss. The dog was kept in a kennel near the trailer.
Verburg and Kennelly found Glowers near the trailer and took the injured dog to Santa Cruz Veterinary Emergency Services. Kennelly listed himself as self-employed and acted as though he was the dog's owner. He told the vet he found the dog in his yard covered with blood.
The vet said the dog had a weak pulse and a penetrating wound to the chest that had been made with a 3-inch blade. The report stated the "owner" decided euthanasia and took the body home.
Verburg told the incident to a logging company foreman, Tim Peet. Peet then told Truong, who contacted the sheriff's department.
The dog's body has not been found nor has Kennelly for questioning. A warrant is being sought for Kennelly. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
