A 13-year old boy is being investigated for setting a female it bull terrier on fire. Police are declining to say whether charges have been filed against the boy. Officials at the Grand Strand Humane Society say it's one of the most severe cases of animal cruelty they've ever seen.

The police reports says a witness told officers he saw the boy burning the dog. Police aren't sure how the dog was burned, but believe a flammable fluid may have been poured on her before she was set on fire.

No motive is known for the attack on the dog.

The burned dog has been named Phoenix by the personnel at the Animal Emergency Hospital of the Strand. The dog was burned over 75% of her body and most of her hair had melted away.

The incident happened at the Sandygate Apartments on Oceola Street. The boy who allegedly set the dog on fire was standing near a vehicle at the scene. He ran when police approached him. He was apprehended and taken into custody after a brief foot chase.

Due to extensive damage to the dog's head, she will need surgery on her eyes and might need to have an ear amputated.

Some people have donated money to help pay for Phoenix's medical bills. Others have offered to give the dog a home.

Article in The State, June 28, 2001, says Phoenix's recovery has suffered a set back when one of her ears fell off as a result of the burns and the other ear appears to be falling off. Cindy Ott, executive director of the humane society, said the loss of Phoenix's ears has not caused the puppy to be deaf. "She's still making progress, but she still has a long way to go."
