Alvin Hagler, 78, a cattleman has been arrested and charged with animal cruelty for killing neighbor's German Shepherd called Buddie.

Tuscaloose County Sheriff Ted Sexton said his department has received about 800 animal related calls in the last year. He said, "It's becoming more and more of a problem every year as we see more people moving out in the country."

Sammy and Carolyn Sullivan, owner's of Buddie, left him in the care of Blakeney Gillett and Whitey Jacquith their neighbors. Gillett and Jacquith were caring for the Sullivan's two dogs, Buddie and Claire, when the incident happened.

When they let the dogs out of their pens to eat, both dogs wandered away, they went to find the dogs and found Hagler standing behind a bush at the end of his driveway pointing a shot gun into his pasture.

Gillett disagrees with Hagler's account that Buddie was harrassing his livestock. Gillett said Buddie was about 15-20 feet away from Hagler's cows and the cows didn't appear to be upset.

The dogs were usually kept in a pen 23 hours a day. Hagler had never complained about the dogs before.

Sullivan said, "Buddie was not a vicious dog. He played with my grandkids and they could do anything with him."

Sexton said he has asked the Tuscaloosa County Commission several times to adopt a leash law because he has no way to force people to keep their pets on their own property. Sexton says, "I hate going out and telling people we can't do anything."
