Mary Isabel's 7-year-old silky terrier was killed on Feb. 5, when someone dropped a cinder block on her. The attack happened at about 6 p.m., while Isabel was preparing dinner in her kitchen. Her three dogs had gone outside to play in her fenced front yard in the 1500 block of West 19th Street. She heard a thud from outside, and then heard Harry, her 5-year-old dog, shrieking in pain; when she went outside, she found a pool of Summer's blood by the short gate where Summer and Harry were wounded.

Summer died quickly; the block crushed her chest and heart, and struck her head. It broke Harry's ankle in two places, and left an open gash on his leg. And it also traumatized Al, a 4-year-old therapy dog that Isabel has used at convalescent homes, who is not outgoing like he used to be.

Isabel is a board member of the City of Angels Silky Terrier Club, and has entered her dogs in several dog shows. Summer, an 8-pound dog, was a champion in American Kennel Club shows, and Harry was just three points away from becoming one. But if his leg doesn't heal properly and he walks with a limp, Isabel said Harry will never be able to compete again. Because his bones are small, doctors decided not to pin them in place, and the 11-pound dog's brace needs to be changed twice a week to keep his wound from becoming infected.

Long Beach police Officer Israel Ramirez said that police did not find witnesses to the crime, but the investigation is continuing. Isabel said she heard more than one voice outside around the time of the attack, which made her think that more than one person was involved.

Anyone with information about the attack is asked to call Detective David Ternullo at (562) 570-7250.
