A 12-year old boy was charged with animal torture and two counts of aggravated assault when neighbors found him beating a puppy with a 2x4 piece of wood.
The boy's name is being withheld.
The puppy was treated by a veterinarian for a broken jaw and internal bleeding. After treatment the puppy was placed in the care of the Granite City Animal control department.
A woman, Cheryl Thompson, 48, and her sister heard the puppy crying as they were cleaning out their garage.
Thompson, said "We heard that puppy yelping for its life. You could tell it was dying."
Granite City police Major Richard Miller said the women found a boy in an alley at the 2200 block of 23rd Street Avenue beating a young Labrador retriever on the head. When one of the women approached the boy, he threatened her with the piece of wood.
Major Miller said the boy was trying to get the stray puppy to fight another dog.
The boy is being held at the Madison County Juvenile Detention Home in Edwardsville.
Miller said patrol officers trained to identify animal abuse cases handled the investigation. After a series of animal abuse cases involving the killing of neighborhood cats, and the arrest of teenagers a special task force on animal abuse was formed.
Miller says identifying animal abusers could prevent future violence.
"Studies show there is a correlation between animal abuse and abuse to humans," said Miller. "Maybe if we can get these people into the justice system and get them some counseling, it will keep them from becoming domestic abusers or murderers.
