Jai Aaron Richey, 23, of Coronado has been arrested for felony animal abuse and booked into the County Jail for allegedly picking up and throwing to the ground a small dog.

The injured black Chihuahua was 5 months old. The small dog was taken to a veterinary hospital with critical injuries.

The police were told by witnesses that the man was walking several dogs along Orange Avenue near Second Street about 2 p.m. when he picked up a Chihuahua and repeatedly threw it to the ground.

The man was followed by witnesses until the police arrived. After Richey ran away with the dogs he was arrested at a nearby apartment where the police officers found the injured dog lying on the floor.
