Neglect of 57 animals
Prattsburgh, NY (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Feb 11, 2005
County: Steuben

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Ernesto Diaz

A Prattsburgh man has been charged with abusing 57 animals, including chickens, rabbits, a duck, pigeons and dogs. Ernesto Diaz, 50, of Burke Road, was charged on Feb 11 with multiple counts of animal cruelty after a lengthy investigation by SPCA Animal Cruelty Officer Scott Mazzo.

Mazzo and Finger Lakes SPCA Inc. officials went to Diaz's home more than two weeks ago and removed the animals from his home.

Vicki Mosgrove, Finger Lakes executive director, said her agency received a complaint regarding the animals' condition from a humane agency outside of the county. When officials arrived at the home with a search warrant, Diaz released the animals into the care of the SPCA, located in Bath.

A number of dead animals were also found at the Diaz home, officials said.

Many of the rescued animals were sent to the Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen soon after their rescue. However, several dogs and rabbits remain at the SPCA shelter in Bath, and are not yet up for adoption, officials said.

No one else was charged in the incident, Mosgrove said.

Diaz will be arraigned in Town Court Feb. 23.
