Animal-cruelty investigators sought clues Tuesday to determine who skinned a 10-week-old puppy.

A detective says two women were driving along Continental Road three-quarters of a mile west of Camino del Portillo Monday morning when they noticed a puppy next to the pecan groves there.

They stopped to ensure the dog wouldnt get hit by a car. They saw the extent of its injuries and called authorities.

Pima County Sheriff's Department detectives describe the dog as a 10-week old Heeler-mix with white fur, droopy ears and a long tail. One of the eyes was brown and the other was half-brown and half-blue. Some fur patterns have also been identified. The dog's ears were dark tan and it had tan "freckles" on the bottom of the front legs

Marsh Myers of the Humane Society of Southern Arizona said the animal was fully skinned except for some fur around its head, face and feet. It was cut to the bone along its back, sides and part of its stomach.

Pima County Sheriff's detective Mike Duffy said he never had heard of a skinned animal found alive.

The Humane Society of Southern Arizona and 88-CRIME both have reward funds established.
