Perry Antley, 36, called EMS to report he had been bitten by his dog while trying to feed him.

When EMS, arrived they discovered the dog smelled strongly of gasoline. Antley told the officers he poured gasoline on the ground and the dog rolled in it.

Antley was arrested on the charge of animal cruelty and was taken to Beaufort County Detention Center. He was later served with an additional charge of failure to register as a sex offender.

Susan Summerall, Director of the Animal Shelter and Control, said it would have been impossible for the dog to get that much gasoline on him by rolling in gasoline spilled on the ground. Summerall said the whole shelter just reeked of gasoline. She said dogs are very sentitive to petroleum products, it severely irritates their eyes and skin.

The dog was eventually taken to the Beaufort County Animal Shelter where it was euthanized.

The dog needed to be tested for rabies because it had never received a rabies shot. They would have preferred to keep the dog, but it was a large mongrel weighing about 75 pounds, anti-social, had been kept on a chain outside for at least 5 years. The dog had a real mean streak.

Antley paid a $425 bail on the animal cruelty charge. Antley stayed in jail pending a second bail hearing on the additional charge which is expected to be given on April 3, 2001.
