Warren Godbold, 48, of 105 Highland Blvd., has been charged with cruelty or ill treatment of an animal and discharging a firearm within city limits.
Godbold is charged with shooting a small white dog that wandered onto his mother's property. When the little dog first went into his mother's backyard located at 5102 Pine Lake Drive, he tried to hit the dog with a slingshot but missed. Godbold then went inside to get a .22 caliber rifle.
The dog which was found wandering on a golf course was given to James Martin. The little dog's name was Sonny. Sonny was given his name because the dog was so friendly and "he was so full of sunshine."
Martin said he was less than 20 feet from the dog when he was shot. Martin said he heard the bullet as it went thru the woods and then heard Sonny yelp when he was hit by the bullet. Sonny weighed less than ten pounds and the bullet did a lot of damage to his body.
Godbold said he has received numerous threats on his life and his mother's life since the incident. He also said he feels nauseous about it and wishes it never happened.
Martin and his mother drove the little dog to the Grand Strand Animal Hospital, but the dog died in his arms on the way to the hospital. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
