Chesapeake officials are investigating after a dog was found dead morning inside a wire crate in a creek near Bainbridge Boulevard.

A necropsy is planned to determine exactly how the canine died. Authorities say if it is determined the dog drowned, whoever put the animal in the creek could be charged with a felony.

The dog was discovered around 11:00am in the 5300 block of Bainbridge Boulevard, next to the Nova Chemical plant, after animal control officials received a tip call. The crate was located in the creek partially submerged in water near the bridge.

The dog is an adult male red Dachshund mix. It was wearing a blue nylon collar and a blue plastic bowl was still inside the black wire crate.
