The Arizona Humane Society and Silent Witness are offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to arrest or indictment in a case involving a friendly puppy whose ears were brutally and purposely cut off without anesthesia.
The 3-month-old pit bull terrier is recovering in the Arizona Humane Societys Second Chance Animal Hospital. An AHS Emergency Animal Medical Technician rescued the pup late Feb 2 near 23rd Avenue and Van Buren Road. Someone cut off both of the pups ears most likely with scissors. No one is sure if the pup escaped from his abuser(s), or if he was dumped after the brutal procedure.
When the AHS EAMT arrived, the pup was bleeding profusely, was lethargic and was dehydrated. Both ears are infected at the wound site.
The puppy is now receiving daily pain medication and antibiotics, and may require surgery to repair the severe damage to his ears. However, his long-term prognosis is good, AHS veterinarians say.
"This is a classic case of a 'home ear-crop gone bad'," said Dr. Kathleen Croteau, AHS chief veterinarian. We suspect that a person or person forcibly held him down and used scissors to cut off his ears. The cuts are jagged and sloppy. He is scarred for life. And without medical intervention, he could have bled to death or developed a deadly infection. This is, no doubt, a horrific act of animal cruelty."
Anyone with information about this case is urged to call Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS. The person(s) responsible could face felony animal-cruelty charges. If you have information on this case, please contact: Silent Witness 480-WITNESS
