Dozens of Baldwin County pit bulls are missing. Authorities believe the dogs were stolen to fight.
"They're stealing them to fight them or to sell to fighters," says Bay Minette's Animal Control Officer, Gina Ramer.
Ramer says now is the time of year that dogs are trained for fights.
"If they have a good male dog, that they know can win fights, then they'll steal females to breed that male to," says Ramer.
And these pit bulls don't come cheap.
"You're talking anywhere from $300 to $2,500 dollars," says Ramer.
One dog owners pet Pit Bull named South fell victim to kidnappers, stolen fromhis backyard.
"He was a full-blood red nose pit. It was a beautiful dog, full-bred, paid $600 for him," stated the owner, who nowspends his time with Doyle, a pit bull he rescued, but he says he will never forget South.
Ramer recovered seven of the missing dogs. Tyson Anderson of Bay Minette is charged with burglary after authorities say he admitted to stealing two pit bulls from two different trailers and selling them.
"Where you've got fighting, you've got drugs, prostitution, gambling, all that's illegal in Alabama," says Ramer.
Ramer emphasizes it is not the dogs that are bad. They are after the owners, and they want the community to look for signs of fighting.
"The major dog fighting scars will be around the snout, the face area, shoulders and front legs," says Ramer.
Mobile's Society of for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals reported that each year there is a handful of reports on missing Pit bulls. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
