Anthony S. McClain, 46, of 4214 South Washington Street, has been charged with animal cruelty, allowing animal fighting and possessing animal fighting equipment.

Mark Wachner, director of the Saginaw County Animal Care Center, said residents don't realize how big the animal cruelty problem is in Saginaw County. Dog fighting, he said, is one of his primary concerns.

Wachner said Saginaw County dog fighters are "intense and in depth."

"It's a family affair," he said. "These people get their children involved in raising these dogs. Children and dogs bond quickly and thoroughly. Then they take this kid to a dog fight and the kid sees the dog get chewed up and killed. They've just lost their best buddy and they're taught that it's normal. These (parents) are raising a callous son-of-a-gun who will hold life in little regard."

Wachner says Saginaw County remains a hot spot for dog fighters. The pit bull population remains high here and authorities often find the dogs with scars that are characteristic fighter-dog scars.
