Dog frozen to death Waterbury, CT (US)Incident Date: Thursday, Jan 13, 2005 County: New Haven
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Name Withheld
A pit bull owner, whose name is currently being withheld, is facing misdemeanor animal cruelty charges after his dog was found frozen to death Monday in the back yard of a North End duplex.
The man's name is being withheld until an arrest warrant is issued, though it is not the first time man and dog have been involved with the police.
"They found the dog dead, they found poor living conditions, no food and just a plastic dog house," said police spokesman Sgt. Christopher Corbett of the visit by animal control officers to a home on Santoro Street.
On Dec. 29, police were called after the pit bull got loose and attacked another dog. Police who responded could not find the dog that evening and no action was taken.
On Dec. 30, the pit bull returned and acted aggressively towards the same dog and it's owner. It ran into the person home where they were able to confine it using a baby gate until police and animal control officers arrived.
The dog was impounded and its owner, collected the animal on Jan. 13 and was cited for letting it roam.
The neighbor who had the confrontation with the dog was worried after the dog's return and they grew increasingly worried about its condition.
The neighbor continued to feed the dog. The plastic-covered dog house frequently lost its roof in the high winds and the straw used as bedding inside was strewn about the yard.
Corbett said the police forensics unit went to the house Monday to document the conditions in preparation for an arrest warrant for animal cruelty. Dogs are not to be kept outside for long periods in extreme conditions.
The animal cruelty charge is punishable by a fine of up to $1,000. and no more than a year in prison. References« CT State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in New Haven County, CT
