A 7-pound black Labrador-mix puppy was drop-kicked and thrown around like a football by several young men who caused severe muscle and nerve injuries to the young puppy.

A woman rescued the puppy and took it to her home. She soon discovered the severe injuries to the dog and took it to the Safe Harbor Animal Rescue & Clinic, 185 E. Indiantown Road in Jupiter.

At the clinic it was determined Angelina, as she was named by the clinic employees, suffered a torn abdominal wall and nerve damange that causes her to shake, fall over and have difficulty walking.

X-rays, scans and a spinal tap will be done to determine the full extent of the puppy'sr injuries.

Total reward money offered for information leading to arrest and conviction of those responsible has reached $4,000. A Palm City attorney and his wife (Stephen Lewel and wife, Linda) sent $2,000 saying, "We just thought it was an unconscionable act. It's just horrible." Martha Bedford, a part-time Palm Beach resident contributed $500.

Angelina the sad eye dog is said to be constantly wagging her tail and has touched the hearts of many people.

At the time of the incident the puppy was about 10 weeks old. She did not have a collar or a tag and she was riddled with parasites.

Clinic personnel says she has the sweetest disposition. Sheriff's deputy Kathy Zeransky said she expects to interview witnesses and will compare their testimony with the veterinarians' descriptions of what could have caused Angelina's injuries before deciding whether to pursue the charges.

Anyone convicted of animal cruelty can face up to one year in jail and up to $10,000 fine.
