Tonasket, WA (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Jan 21, 2005
County: Okanogan

Disposition: Alleged
Case Images: 12 files available

Alleged: Karen K. Johnson

Okanogan County Sheriff's Deputies on Friday shut down a puppy mill near Tonasket, Washington, and rescued more than 100 animals.

Deputies say along with the dogs and cats, a 12-year-old girl and her mother, Karen K. Johnson, were living in filth. Deputies say the two people had no power, food or water and were using the dogs for warmth.

SpokAnimal rescued 50 of the 100 dogs found on the property. Twenty-five of the dogs are being housed at SpokAnimal's facility, the other 25 are at an off site location. This single rescue has doubled the dog population at the shelter. Another 50 dogs are being kept by the Howling Ridge Animal Rescue Group out of Tonasket.

Johnson was arrested and booked on charges of Criminal Mistreatment of her daughter and Cruelty to Animals in the 1st Degree. Johnson's daughter was removed from residence and released to her father.

If you are interested in fostering or adopting one of the dogs call 534-8133.
