A Marina man charged with dismembering the family cat and scattering its remains around the residence faces a felony count of animal cruelty.

Mark Cornell, 34, was arrested by the Marina Department of Public Safety after police were called to his home on Jan. 3 and reported finding pieces of the dead cat.

"He'd gotten angry with the cat, killed it and dismembered it," said Marina Public Safety Lt. Rick Janicki. "Pieces of the cat were everywhere, some inside, some outside."

No other animals were at the house, Janicki said.

Janicki said he wasn't certain whether the cat had been killed that day or earlier.

Police were dispatched to the family home after Cornell's wife apparently told a neighbor what had happened, Janicki said.

Cornell and his wife live in the Pueblo Del Mar apartments, a transitional housing facility on Fort Ord. Many of the tenants have substance abuse problems.

He is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 28. If convicted, Cornell could be fined $20,000 and sentenced to a maximum of three years in prison.
