The Queen Anne's County Department of Animal Control is investigating the discovery of a badly decomposed dog, which had been inside of a portable kennel.
Authorities said the kennel was found abandoned in the 400 block of Bay Drive in Kent Island Estates. The dog was found inside the crate and, according to the Maryland State Health Lab Veterinarian, had been dead between 1 and 2 months.
Queen Anne's County Department of Animal Control director John Conover said the kennel was discovered early Dec. 13 and was apparently dropped off on Bay Drive -- which he described as a lightly traveled area -- sometime the night before. Conover said the animal had died elsewhere.
According to the veterinarian, the dog appeared to be a large-sized shepard or chow mix, black in color, approximately 80 to 100 lbs., with long hair.
Conover said they were treating the case as a crime because when the dog was discovered, it had apparently attempted to chew its way out of the plastic kennel. He said the animal's head was sticking out of the kennel through a hole created by the dog.
The Humane Society of Queen Anne's County, Adopt-A-Pet, Inc. and the Animal Resource Foundation are offering a reward of $1,500 for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone responsible for the crime.
