Puppies ears cropped with scissors
Renton, WA (US)

Incident Date: Sunday, Oct 31, 2004
County: King

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Cindy I. Martinez

Case Updates: 1 update(s) available

A Renton woman who cut off her puppy's ear with a pair of scissors has been charged with animal cruelty. A veterinarian told police the ear had been cut without anesthetic and bled extensively.

After her arrest in November, 21-year-old Cindy I. Martinez said she wanted her dog to look like dogs with cropped ears she saw in a magazine for pit bull enthusiasts.

The two-inch ear was cut to less than three-quarters of an inch.

Case Updates

Martinez was sentenced to spend two days in jail Friday after pleading guilty to animal cruelty for cutting off half of her pit bull puppy's left ear.

In addition to two days in jail, Martinez was ordered to serve 300 hours of community service and submit to the requirements of one year of community custody.

Last month, she pleaded guilty to a reduced second-degree animal cruelty.

She originally was charged with first-degree animal cruelty, a Class C felony, which could have landed her in prison for up to five years.
