A St. Albans man was charged with animal cruelty Wednesday for allegedly stabbing a woman's dog multiple times, removing its heart and disemboweling the animal, according to a criminal complaint filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court.

Robert Neil Jones, 26, allegedly killed the dog, named Ginger, on Jan. 10 at his apartment at 418 Third Ave. N. as retribution against his girlfriend, according to the complaint and the Kanawha County Sheriffs Department.

Jones allegedly left a written message for his girlfriend inside the residence and on the womans vehicle alluding to the dogs death, the complaint said.

He was being held Wednesday night at the South Central Regional Jail on $20,000 bond. As part of his bail, he will not be allowed to have any contact with the dogs owner and cannot own an animal until the case is resolved.

If convicted, Jones could face one to three years in prison and a $5,000 fine. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Jan. 21.

Case Updates

On January 10, 2006, Robert Jones was sentenced to up to three years in prison in Kanawha Circuit Court. Robert Neil Jones was found guilty of animal cruelty in September. Circuit Judge Charlie King sentenced Jones to the maximum prison term, one to three years, and ordered him to pay $2,500 in fines.

Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Rob Schulenberg said that Jones slit open the belly of Teresa Youngs Chihuahua-mix dog, named Ginger, and tried to remove the dogs heart. Jones then left the dog in a bag on the porch of Youngs trailer in St. Albans, leaving a note on her refrigerator and in the dust of her car. Jones maintained that he was innocent of the crime. I swear that I didnt kill Ginger, Jones told Young during the sentencing. I didnt kill Ginger on everything that I love. Young just wanted some answers.
All I wanted to know is why, she said to Jones. Throughout this whole thing you never said you were sorry.

Jones received credit for the 363 days he has already served in South Central Regional Jail and will be eligible for parole on January 12, 2006.

A St. Albans man accused of mutilating his ex-girlfriend's dog was convicted in Kanawha Circuit Court on a felony animal cruelty charge.

Robert Neil Jones, 27, faces one to three years in jail and a $5,000 fine when sentenced under a law passed last year that created a felony animal cruelty charge. He was convicted Thursday.

During the trial, prosecutors said that on Jan. 10, Jones slit the dog's stomach open and tried to pull out its heart.

But Jones testified that a truck hit the Chihuahua-mix dog named Ginger and he carried the body back to Teresa Young's trailer, leaving it in a trash bag outside the residence.

Jones said he went looking for Young to tell her about Ginger's death, but couldn't find her so he left a note on her car and another on her refrigerator.

In closing arguments, Kanawha County Assistant Prosecutor Rob Schulenberg showed jurors two pictures of the dog and said that to Young, Ginger was a member of the family.

Jones has been held in the South Central Regional Jail since January on a $20,000 bond.

Jones appeared in Kanawha County Magistrate Court Friday for a preliminary hearing. After hearing testimony from Jones ex-girlfriend, Teresa Young, Magistrate Marva Crouch sent the animal cruelty case to the countys grand jury and ordered Jones to remain in South Central Regional Jail on a $20,000 bond.

Police charged Jones, 26, with killing Youngs dog, Ginger, after Young found the dogs corpse Jan. 10 in a plastic bag on her patio. The dogs heart and intestines were hanging out of apparent knife wounds.

Young said Jones killed Ginger after she left the house because of domestic problems.
